Key terms:
Protozoa- A single celled organism that can either be free living or parasitic. Protozoa feed on organic matter such as other microorganisms or organic tissues and debris.

Trichomoniasis (aka Trich) is caused by a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis.

Unlike BV, Trichomoniasis is an STI,
And both males and females are able to get the infection.

The most common symptoms of Trich for biological females are:
-Yellow green discharge
-Discharge that has an odor
-Itching/burning/soreness of the genitals

For biological males the symptoms are:
-Discharge from penis
-Itching and irritation inside the penis
-Burning

Surprisingly, many people will not show symptoms and will not know they have Trich

Since Trich is an STI, preventative measures include practicing safer sex or abstaining from sex.

And last but not least💕

DO NOT feel embarrassed if you have or had Trich before.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Key terms:
Normal vaginal flora- microorganisms that live in the vagina that do not cause disease.

Bacterial vaginosis is caused by anaerobic bacteria, particularly the species G.vaginalis

Although anaerobic bacteria are found in small numbers in some women, this bacteria is not a part of the normal vaginal flora and will cause infection in the vagina if pH is disturbed.

The vagina’s natural environment is acidic with a pH of around 4-5.
G.vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria that contributes to BV thrives in alkaline (basic) environments.
So when pH is disrupted, the vagina becomes more basic, making it easy for these bacteria to grow.

The most common symptoms of BV are:

Yeast infections are caused by a yeast called Candida
Candida is naturally found in the vagina but if there is a sudden change in vaginal pH or a disrupt in normal vaginal flora, candida can multiply leading to the onset of a yeast infection.

The most common symptoms of a yeast infection is vaginal and vulvar itchiness, and abnormal, clumpy, discharge.
* cottage cheese-like appearance

Candida love’s warm, moist environments. So be mindful that wearing tight clothes (like leggings and tight-fitted jeans) and certain underwear materials (like lycra and nylon) can create that damp environment that Candida thrives in.
* Thongs should also be avoided.

And lastly but certainly not least💕

It’s Myth Buster Monday🕵️

Myth: you can’t get pregnant during your period.

This statement is not entirely true for everyone😬

Although the chances are low, there is still a possibility of getting pregnant while on your period. It is true that you are the least fertile during menstruation ( days 1-7 of the menstrual cycle). However, as you approach ovulation the possibility to conceive increases. Your best chances of conceiving is when you are ovulating (around day 10-14). For those who have the typical 28-30+ day cycle, ovulation is several days away from menstruation, decreasing the chances of pregnancy.

However, those who have shorter cycles (21-24 day cycles) typically ovulate earlier in the cycle.
Since sperm can survive for about 5 days, there is a possibility of getting pregnant if you have sex towards the end of your period.

The probability of getting pregnant while on your period is low, but the possibility is still there‼️

Although the withdrawal [aka pull out] method is a means of birth control, it is not the most effective way.

27 out of 100 women will get pregnant per year when relying on the withdrawal method only

This is because sperm can be present in pre-ejaculatory fluid and can even leak out before full ejaculation
